The Chemistry of Allergies

The Chemistry of Allergies

The Chemistry of Allergies
By Kui Kariuki

An allergy is characterized as an immune reaction to the presence of certain substances in one's body. Allergies occur when the immune system mistakes a harmless substance for a pathogen. The immuniglobin responsible for allergies is the IgE immuniglobin. Humans are not born with IgE antibodies in their body. The IgE develops 10 days after the first exposure to allergens. Therefore, it takes repeated exposure to an allergen, to develop an allergy. Allergies are often not formed upon first exposure.

Have you ever wondered why people have specific allergies? This is because IgE immuniglobins have a single protein structure and a set of molecules that all have a slightly different structure. The IgE, for example that reacts with pollen, is not the same IgE that will react with dust. People who have allergic reactions, also have more IgE present in their bodies than the average, non-allergy containing person. For example: people with hay fever have about 14 times as much IgE as those who do not.

There are four basic ways that allergens can enter human bodies: inhaling, touching, ingestion or by injection. There are also two basic types of allergic reactions known as: immediate or delayed. In a delayed allergic reaction, symptoms usually appear about 4 hours, to a few days after exposure to an allergen. In an immediate reaction, symptoms usually appear only minutes after exposure.

The chemical that is associated with the symptoms of allergy such as itching or swelling, is called Histamine. Histamine is the main chemical involved in allergies. Histamine is formed from the breakdown of Histine, which is an amino acid. Histamine causes many things that lead to the symptoms experienced during an allergic reaction. Histamine, for example, can cause contraction or swelling of certain muscles, or stimulate the production of tears or saliva. It can also cause blood vessels to become dilated, which leads to swelling. The most severe reaction relating to histamine is known as anaphylactic shock. This occurs when an allergy causes a significant drop in blood pressure, and can result in death.

There are chemical treatments that are used to treat allergies. Some of these treatments include: steroids and antihistamines. Antihistamines are the most commonly distributed chemical treatment for allergies. Antihistamines simply block histamines from certain sites on cells, which prevents the allergic reaction caused by histamines from occurring. There are very many antihistamine medications that affect people in different ways. That is why it is best to consult a doctor about the one best suited to your specific body type and allergy. Steroids work to relieve swelling, itching and redness that occurs as a result of an allergic reaction. Therefore, steroids are often used on allergy symptoms such as hives or eczema.

How to Protect Yourself From Allergies

How to Protect Yourself From Allergies

How to Protect Yourself From Allergies
By Eleni Zervou

Allergy free home

Modern living conditions are the main cause for allergy increase. People tend to spend more time indoors due to their lifestyle. Yes, we leave in cleaner homes but do we live in a cleaner environment?

Keep rooms dry

Use an exhaust fan in bathrooms, laundry rooms after every use to reduce mold. Keep a dehumidifier in the basement and remember to clean and empty it as it collects all the moisture. Check frequently the areas where moisture and mold develops, under the sinks, leaky faucets or pipes, even your fish tank. Once a week wipe dry around the sink, bathtub and toilet, use a plastic shower curtain that can be washed as often as needed. Keep the bathroom door open or open slightly a window. Rooms must be kept dry and Do not overwater your indoor plants.

Pets

It is not your cat or dog you are allergic to, but to proteins found in the animal's fur, saliva dander and urine. So keep your loving pet away from your bedroom or even better outdoors if that is possible. Have your pet groomed everyday preferably outside. Use a damp pet brush or comb to trap dander.

Furniture

Be careful of what you bring into the house. Non-washable curtains, upholstered furniture and wall-to-wall carpeting are all collectors of dust mites and mold. You may want to consider hardwood floors or tiles as they do not collect dander, a washable curtain or shades or just keep your windows bare.

Clutter and collectibles

Books, newspapers all household items attract dust. To avoid allergens in your home, dust surfaces as often as needed. Recycle newspapers, magazines, cans and plastics once a week. If you need to store any items use plastic bins or bags.

Children's room

Soft toys accumulate dust mites more than you can possibly imagine. You cannot see them but they are there. Since children love them or having them in their room not to mention on their bed, you should buy stuffed toys that can be machine-washed and pave in the dryer.

Bedrooms

Tiny bugs nestle in your mattress and pillows, dust mites, thrive on humid atmosphere. So, use dust proof casing for your pillows and mattress, microfiber ones are preferred. Wash your sheets once a week in high temperature and place them in the dryer. Avoid fluffing your pillows and bed covers.

Kitchen area

Check your fridge for moisture, wipe the door clean with a damp cloth and occasionally check the drip pans, make sure they are dry to avoid mildew.

To reduce moisture install an exhaust fan over the stove for the cooking fumes.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming, dusting or sweeping stir up dust mites and it takes some time before they settle. You certainly do not want to breathe them. Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air filter) and remember to change it when necessary depending on its use.

Protect yourself and family from allergies. Keep your home clean, dry, and well ventilated.

The Many Benefits of Physical Therapy

The Many Benefits of Physical Therapy

The Many Benefits of Physical Therapy
By Alfred Ardis

When it comes to healthcare, many people are skeptical about the idea of physical therapy. What exactly is it? Is it an alternative to a regular doctor's visit? Who are PTs, and how can they help me? There are many questions, but this article will shed some light on the role it plays in potential patients' lives.

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is treatment in response to a health problem that affects a person's everyday mobility. The goal is to alleviate one's day-to-day difficulties and make the small aspects of daily activity easier. By no means is it a substitute for a doctor's visit; on the contrary, it is usually prescribed to a patient by a doctor as a treatment for an ailment. For example, if a subject is diagnosed with a serious hairline fracture in the tibia (leg) and requires crutches, then the doctor will probably provide a prescription for a one or two month series of physical therapy appointments. These appointments will come after the leg is healed, but are meant to strengthen the leg after its absence of walking. The appointments can take place at a private facility or hospital and are in conjunction with one's doctor and insurance.

Who Are Physical Therapists?

PTs are licensed healthcare professionals, usually with a graduate degree, who are trained to know best practices in muscle and body rehabilitation. Often with a background in sports, PTs are familiar with many possible injuries and are skilled in providing relief to those injuries. They supply a better alternative to long-term prescription drug use or surgery. In cases where surgery is necessary, they can reduce pain after a difficult procedure and improve the rehabilitation process. PTs can be found at private clinics, hospitals, home health agencies, or other places where there is a need for treatment.

What Can a New Patient Expect?

During the first appointment with a PT, one can expect a diagnosis and synopsis of an ailment and beginner activities to alleviate the ailment. After multiple appointments, one can begin to expect a steady regimen of exercises, stretches, and other activities designed to target the condition and treat it. Many of these activities can be done at home without the need for multiple on-site meetings. A PT will ask a patient to practice the stretches outside of the appointment, but treatment centers are equipped with a variety of machines and tools to assist in treatment.

The benefits of physical therapy are unparalleled: reducing pain, improving mobility, healing tissue, offsetting injuries, managing conditions like heart disease and diabetes, and more. If avoiding surgery or a lengthy drug prescription is a priority, one should look into an appointment. There are more than 200,000 licensed PTs in the U.S. located throughout the country and help can be easily found.

Conquer Asthma!

Conquer Asthma!

Conquer Asthma!
By Andy Gibson

Have you had enough? Too many asthma attacks, too many half-hearted attempts at control - and a steadily worsening condition? Have you decided it's time you did something more than merely "put up with it"? If so, you've turned a corner in handling your medical problem. You're ready to stop suffering - and take command.

As always, your first marching order must be to learn as much as you can about your condition, to be well-equipped with the facts.

WHERE ASTHMA COMES FROM?

The first thing you have to accept is that asthma is a disease, and not the psychosomatic condition myths and fiction describe.

Many cases of asthma do start in childhood. In fact, it often comes and goes by the later teen years. But the disease is no heavy age discriminator. It affects 1 person in 25 overall and 1 child in 10.

Fact is, no one knows exactly why asthma happens. Heredity often does play a role, though in several cases there's no family history. Allergies can trigger attacks, and there's also evidence that air pollutants can contribute. Occupational asthma - exposure to certain chemicals in the workplace - can also affect adults. Nonetheless, asthma sometimes just can't be explained.

Likewise, while the medicines for the management of asthma have improved considerably over the years, there's still no silver bullet. As a result, asthma appears to be becoming more common, and the death rate is on the rise.

True, it's not as high compared to the death rate in diabetes, cancer or heart disease. But asthma deaths have the distinction of being unnecessary. Most experts believe asthma shouldn't be fatal.

WHAT GOES WRONG?

After all this time, however, nobody really knows for sure why asthma occurs - only what happens when it does. So, successful asthma treatment is more a matter of careful management than of finding a cure. And to successfully manage this lung disease, it's helpful to understand how the system works.

During normal breathing, air enters through the nostrils and washes against mucus in the air passages, where the fluid traps most impurities, such as germs and dust. At the same time, the cilia (tiny hair s in the nasal passages) remove old mucus and a good and a good deal of other contaminants. When they reach your windpipe, mucus and captured impurities are coughed back up. Swallowing sends the mixture down to the stomach, where the acid digestive juices work them over and eliminate them from the body.

The windpipe, or trachea, extends downward from the voice box (called the pharynx). This tube then divides into two bronchi - one into the left lung, the other into the right. The bronchi then divide again and again into smaller and smaller passages which are surrounded by tiny bands of smooth muscles. Eventually they become microscopic. Finally, at the end of these tiny bronchi (or bronchioles) we reach tiny, balloon-like sacs known as alveoli. Here oxygen and carbon dioxide are transferred to and from the blood as the alveoli expand and contract while you breathe.

Three things happen during as asthma attack to disrupt this process. If it's an allergen slips past the defenses and into your "hypersensitive" airways, and the bronchi become irritated. The inflammation, in turn, causes the muscle bands around the bronchi to tighten, narrowing the passages and restricting air flow. At the same time, the irritation produces more mucus and also swelling of the cells. The result: a very narrow lumen (the diameter of the bronchi), which results in an asthma attack.

Why some allergic people have asthma and other allergic people don't is a mystery, and to date no one has found a cure. But the experts finally have found ways to manage the disease.

In 1991, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in the U.S. issued new guidelines on asthma. Where asthma was asthma was previously described as a spasm in the air passages, the new guidelines emphasize that chronic inflammation is a key cause, and aerosol anti-inflammatory drugs are more effective and have fewer side-effects than bronchodilators (Inhalers like the one many sufferers depend on.)

When both drugs are judiciously combined and taken regularly as a preventive course - rather than just when you have a problem - the combo has been found to keep the air passages much clearer and more open.

Of course, the right regimen of drugs is of little help without full patient cooperation.

Communication comes first. Talk about the course with your doctor. And keep the communication lines open. If you decide to stop a medication for some reason, let him know about it.

Second is education. Something as simple as knowing when the inhaler is empty is extremely important. Shaking it is not enough. Submerging it in water to see if it floats (empty) or sinks (full) is best. And it's vital to have a back-up in case you miscalculate.

Third is pulmonary function testing to objectively measure how you are doing. The two most effective tests are spirometry and the peak flow monitor. The first measures how well air is moving in and out of the lungs. The second measures the maximum air you can blow out. By measuring peak flow every morning you can get an idea what to expect from your lungs throughout the day. If you fall below the baseline you set for yourself, you can call your doctor and add a little extra medication to help you get through a particularly rough day.

A fourth and perhaps most important goal is allergy avoidance. Know what you're allergic to, and keep your contact with it to an absolute minimum.

With the correct use of medication, you can be in charge of the asthma. Asthma shouldn't keep you from carrying on a normal life.

But control only comes with the understanding that this is a complex disease requiring a lifetime of commitment top one's health. The rewards are significant: Life becomes richer without asthma in the way.

My firm belief is: "Finding a cause leads the way to find a cure". So, it is basically important to understand everything from its deepest core. And the best way to do so is: Keep on reading to develop and deepen your understanding on health and wellness at GrowTaller4IdiotsDS.com.

What Is Roseola?

What Is Roseola?

What Is Roseola?
By Tzun Hon Lau

Roseola, a common infection affecting children less than 2 years of age, is a mild infection characterised by fever, rash, and generalized irritability in infants.

Two common strains of herpes virus cause roseola. Duration of disease can last beyond a week in some cases.

Roseola typically isn't serious. However, in some cases, uncontrolled high fevers can result in complications.

Treatment of roseola includes bed rest, fluids and anti-pyretic medications.

Symptoms

Roseola can be dormant in the child up to a week or 10 days. Once the disease erupts, the symptoms include:

  • Fever. Roseola typically starts with a sudden, high fever greater than 39.4 C. Other symptoms experienced include a sore throat, runny nose or cough. Swollen lymph nodes can also occur. The fever usually lasts 3-5 days.
  • Rash. Once the fever subsides, a rash typically appears - but not always. The rash consists of many small pink spots or patches, are generally flat, and usually has a global distribution all over the body. The rash, which isn't itchy or uncomfortable, can last from several hours to several days before fading.
Other signs and symptoms of roseola may include:

  • Irritability in infants and children
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Swollen eyelids
When to see a doctor

Seek immediate medical care if the child has a seizure due to uncontrolled fevers.

Call your child's doctor if:

  • The fever is uncontrolled.
  • The illness is prolonged and unresolving after a week.
Call your doctor

If immunocompromised, contact your doctor. Monitoring for a possible infection will be necessary.

Causes

The most common cause of roseola is the human herpes virus 6, and in rare cases, herpes 7.

It is spread via respiratory secretions or saliva. Hence children in close contact with other children become infected easily.

Roseola is contagious even if no rash is present. Hence the disease can spread insidiously.

Risk factors

Older infants are at greatest risk of acquiring roseola because their immune system is still developing. Newborn babies receive antibodies from their mothers that protect them in the first 6 months of life. Hence, the most common age of infection is between 6 to 15 months.

Complications

1. Seizures in children

Uncontrolled fevers can result in seizures in children. This often presents as a brief loss of consciousness, jerking of limbs, and or temporary loss of bladder or bowel control.

Although frightening, febrile seizures in otherwise healthy children are generally short-lived and are rarely harmful. However, seek medical care if unsure.

Complications from roseola are rare. The vast majority of otherwise healthy children and adults with roseola recover quickly and completely.

2. Concerns for immunocompromised individuals

Immunocompromised individuals, for example, those who have recently received a bone marrow or organ transplant, may contract roseola as a new infection or due to reactivation of the dormant virus in their body.

These patients may experience potentially serious complications from the infection, such as

pneumonia or encephalitis.

Preparing for your appointment

Prior to seeing the doctor, encourage your child to rest and drink lots of fluids.

Tests and diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually clinical though a blood test can be done to check for antibodies.

Treatments and drugs

Most children spontaneously recover within a week of the onset of the fever.

Medications to control fever can be used for symptom control.

Prevention

Avoid exposing your child to an infected child. If your child is sick with roseola, keep him or her home and away from other children until the fever subsides.

Most patients are immune by the time they are of schooling age. However, basic hand washing is recommended to prevent the spread of the disease.

Adults who never contracted roseola as children can become infected later in life, though the disease tends to be mild in healthy adults. Infected adults however can pass the disease to children.

Causes of Calcium Deposits

Causes of Calcium Deposits

Causes of Calcium Deposits
By Leslie Dutcher

Nearly all calcium in the body is used to build strong bones and strong teeth. Only about 1% of calcium circulates in the organs, tissues and bloodstream. Calcium can form deposits in various tissues of the body, in both specific locations or in multiple areas. Sometimes calcium deposits are harmless but calcium deposits can also be harmful. The two primary causes of calcium deposits outside the bones; one is damaged tissue and the other is an excess calcium level in the body.

When calcium blood levels are normal, calcification can take place from local tissue damage. Tissue damage can be a magnet for calcium into the damaged tissue. Blood vessel calcification is very common and occurs in damaged tissues in the arteries and is known as atherosclerosis. These damaged areas in the arteries build up fat etcetera, forming plaque which calcifies over time. Plaques narrow the arteries which can provoke a clot formation often leading to a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure.

Calcium deposits in the breast is another common type of small-scale tissue damage which leads to calcification. Sometimes calcium deposits in the breast are cancerous while at other times it is benign.

Large-scale tissue damage is connected to the extensive loss of cells, which is referred to as tissue necrosis. Necrosis is caused by the death of tissue in a precise area of the body. This dead tissue attracts cells that both clean up the dead tissue. This healing process draws calcium to the bad tissue area as part of the healing process.

Infections are associated to this type of calcification which are found in the lungs and the heart area and referred to as pericarditis which is an inflammation of the pericardium. Tissue damage along with inflammation can cause tissue calcification. This type of Calcium deposits are often found in shoulder tendons, ankles or knees.

Calcification can also occur from a high blood calcium level. If there is an excess of calcium in the bloodstream it begins to deposit in the tissues of the body.

There are usually no symptoms when calcification of tissues occurs in the body. There are symptoms to watch for which indicate excessive calcium in the body. Weakness, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, confusion or drowsiness are some of the symptoms that indicate excessive calcium in the body. Also be aware of chest pain, joint aches and muscle aches. Often tissue calcification is harmless but if your experience any of these symptoms see your doctor as quickly as possible.

The Hurricane Of Heroin

The Hurricane Of Heroin

The Hurricane Of Heroin
By Sherry Lynn Daniel

The newest tidal wave of chemical addiction is called 'Iatrogenic disease.' It occurs when a potential addict takes pain pills after surgery or injury and becomes addicted. Then, the doctor cuts them off which leaves them with an uncontrollable itch that only an opiod will scratch. To the least informed among us, they are labeled as having a 'moral issue or weakness.'

Any human can get tripped up by addiction. Those chemical hooks don't care. They arrived at birth poised to strike inside 10% of us and they are fierce. Passed down genetically through the generations, current addicts are poorly served by keeping it a secret.

"Why don't they just stop?" "They did it to themselves." We are judging the addict to death, literally. About 70 years ago, the AMA-American Medical Association-declared alcoholism a disease. It sure wasn't treated like one. Monitored? Researched? Forums held? It was the black sheep of the medical disorder list.

Pull up a breast cancer website. It is all pink and pretty with hopeful messages on t-shirts during fun runs. Then, check out some of the drug rehab sites: handcuffs, an empty whiskey bottle and a skull and crossbones. A very different tone. No one was 'running for their cure.'

People with lung cancer aren't shamed for smoking. Did a diabetic's chosen diet cause the imbalance? Self-mutilators? They're known to suffer from a brain disorder and not blamed. The medical community and all the pharmaceutical companies have done the addict/alcoholic a MONSTER-SIZED disservice. Addiction has now claimed more lives than any war to date!

Treating prescription drug addiction is very different than heroin or alcohol. Today, they are usually treated together and handed the 'big book' of Alcoholics Anonymous and a list of meetings. The majority are introduced to the "Twelve Steps." Medications are frowned upon.

Physicians once treated chronic pain patients with escalating doses of opiates. The results for many was development of complications, drug dependence and limited improvement. It was the only solution offered and then patients were left to figure out addiction by watching it happen. To break this pattern, a unique profile must be developed for the chronic pain patient and better tools for the management of both addiction and pain need to be explored.

Chronic pain patients present a challenge to doctors for several reasons including ongoing pain complaints, fear of activity and a higher incidence of untreated psychological issues. Pain should be treated as a multi-layered condition. Some patients need help from different sources, not just a medical man who either says yes or no to a prescription.

Drug addiction and dependence are very controversial. Over time, they have been the subject of much debate in the development of criteria for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the bible of the psychology world.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as "a primary, chronic, neurobiologic disease with genetic, psycho-social, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations."

Impaired control over use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm, and cravings are the hallmarks of dependence. "Chemical Use Disorder" involves a physiological dependence composed of tolerance and/or withdrawal symptoms.

Unlike addiction to non-prescription drugs (e.g. alcohol, cocaine, heroin), Iatrogenic disease requires a doctor's help to kick into gear. Today, that same doctor should educate himself thoroughly and seek out new treatments.

There are new drugs on the market that decrease cravings, help battle the horrors of withdrawal and one may even 'vaccinate' against heroin. With it, the user won't get a 'high." These are barely used and slowly developed. A list of AA meetings is usually the first line of treatment.

There is an old and tired idea about not using drugs to treat drugs but it is better than burying so many until we figure out an answer. At least new meds can keep some alive while we come up with something better than a treatment written in 1939 that hasn't changed a word since.

It is time to try to bring the new drugs into use and safely start human trials. If Europe is having success with Baclofen, China with Kudzu, Africa with Ibogaine, why couldn't we be open to new ideas as soon as possible?

Types Of Prostate Diseases

Types Of Prostate Diseases

Types Of Prostate Diseases
By Idd Aziz

The prostate is one of the most sensitive organs in the body. Just like the other parts of the body, it's affected by a number of diseases. The most common diseases include:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Also known as enlarged prostate, the condition is very common in men over 75 years. According to experts, the condition is part of the normal body aging process and it's brought about by changes in cell growth and hormone imbalance. When you are suffering from the condition you tend to experience trouble getting started urinating, experience weak urine stream, feel like you need to urinate, and after urinating, you feel as if the bladder isn't completely empty.

Prostate cancer

It's estimated that one in every 11 men over the age of 50 suffer from the condition. When you are suffering from the condition, there are no signs of the tumor. Instead, you experience the symptoms brought about by the blockage from the cancer. The symptoms are almost similar to the ones you experience when you are suffering from enlarged prostate. They include: frequent need to urinate, difficulty starting and stopping a stream of urine, weak urinary system, leaking urine when coughing or laughing, blood in urine, and inability to urinate when standing up.

The good thing is that the condition can be easily rectified when identified early thus its recommended that you regularly get tested if you are over the ages of 40.

Prostatitis

This is an inflammatory disease that affects 1 in every 15 young or middle-aged men. In most cases, the condition is brought about by a bacterial infection. There are many types of this condition with the most common being:

Acute bacterial prostatitis: This is a sudden bacterial infection that is characterized by inflammation of the prostate. Experts observe that it's the least common types. When you are suffering from it you tend to experience acute urinary tract infection where you suffer from increased urinary frequency and urgency. You also tend to feel the urge to urinate a lot especially at night and it's common to have pain in the genital area and pelvis.

Chronic bacterial prostatitis: The condition is as a result of recurrent urinary tract infections that have entered the prostate gland. The symptoms of the condition are similar to those you find in acute bacterial prostatitis but they are less severe and can fluctuate in intensity.

Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis: It's the most common type of disease that accounts for up to 90% of prostatitis cases. When you are suffering from the condition you tend to experience urinary and genital pain.

6 Tips to Fit Meditation Into Your Life Each Day

6 Tips to Fit Meditation Into Your Life Each Day

6 Tips to Fit Meditation Into Your Life Each Day
By Mark W Howell

Believe it or not, Meditation is not a complicated practice. Kids can meditate as well as adults. You do not have to have a certain surrounding, social training, ethnic background or group to profit from reflection. The ancient spiritual practice provides itself to multiple benefits, favorably enhancing how you function psychologically as well as physically.

Since people have such busy lives, it may seem difficult to work time for meditation into your everyday life. It is easier than you think. The following tips will certainly help you have time each day to relax your mind, concentrate on the "present", and enjoy the many positive effects of meditation.

1. Try to find Time Gaps

Even the busiest individuals have 10 to 15 minute empty spots in their days. So do you. Start checking out your regular daily schedule. You can probably find at least one, if not more, spots in your day where you can use the time differently. Take advantage of this time to meditate as well as provide a mental reset.

2. Don't Worry About Having the Typical Meditation Experience

You don't have to be on a pillow on the floor seated in the lotus position, the room full of lavender scent and mystical music. Meditation can happen in the drive-through, while doing laundry, or when you are sitting in your car waiting for the kids to get out of school.

3. Meditate Just Before Going to Bed or Waking Up

If you are like most of us, you use the time before going to bed watching television, checking Facebook or some other less important activity. Swap out at least 15 minutes of that time to use for meditating. In fact, you could go to bed 15 minutes early and simply meditate just before drifting off to sleep. Another option is to set your alarm 15 minutes earlier and use that time to meditate and start your day on a positive note.

4. Make an Appointment with Yourself

When you focus on something by putting it on your calendar, you improve the odds of getting it done. Because our minds like lists of things to do you can help yourself by scheduling a regular time each day for meditation. It doesn't matter if you use a paper planner, online calendar or your phone. What matter is that you schedule it in and set a reminder so you receive a little motivation to take the time to meditate.

5. Make it a Part of Your Exercise Routine

Do you take your dog on a walk each day? Do you jog, walk, bike, swim or do some other physical activity every day? If so, combine your meditation with your workout. Meditation does not necessarily mean you need to close your eyes and shut out everything. You can use the time while exercising to focus your mind on the present.

6. You Can do it With Two Breaths

Before you return a call, check your e-mail, back out of your garage or do some other simple job, take in 2 deep breaths. If you can, close your eyes, and pay attention to your breath. Take each breath in deeply, hold it for 2 seconds, and then breathe out slowly. No matter how busy your day may be, this is a simple method to enjoy several moments of relaxation and meditation throughout the day.

Choose 1 or more of these tips to put into your daily routine and begin to experience the positive changes. After you put one of these into practice you can add a second one to your day to add variety or to at least have options based upon your schedule of activities. You can do this!

What Happens During A VI Peel Treatment

What Happens During A VI Peel Treatment

What Happens During A VI Peel Treatment
By Juanita Swindell

VI Peel is a gentle chemical peel that is used to nourish and improve the skin so it looks younger and healthier. This is a painless process with minimum downtime so it is great for anyone looking for a quick and safe way to get better looking skin.

Before The Procedure

Before starting the procedure, the practitioner will clean the area of skin that you want to get treated. This cleaning is done with acetone.

The Peel Procedure

After your skin is thoroughly cleaned, a layer of the VI peel is applied over the area. Slowly more layers are added on with a few seconds in between. The whole process can take about 20 to 45 minutes. The exact time will depend on the area that is being treated and the desired results.

After the required applications, the peel is left on your skin. Over the ensuing six hours, the peel will self-neutralize and your skin will start to look and feel tighter and smoother.

After The Peel Procedure

Immediately after the treatment, your skin will look darker as if it is tanned. After about three days, the skin in the treated area will begin to peel. This will go on for another three to four days. The peeling process should be completed around the seventh day. At this time your skin should be feeling smoother and have a more balanced tone.

Leaving the peel on for at least six hours will give it enough time to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin for longer lasting effect.

Caring For Your Skin After The VI Procedure

For best results of the VI Procedure it is very important that you take the proper precautions to avoid the risk of adverse reaction. For example, one of the most important post-treatment precautions is to stay out of the sun. Exposure to the sun can trigger off an adverse reaction.

In addition, you must avoid using any types of skin care products such as moisturizers, sun screens or make up remover on the treated skin for a few days after the procedure. Instead, the only product you can use is the contents from the post peel kit that you will receive after you've done the procedure. The kit contains various products with instructions to use each one. For best results, you must take time to read the instructions and follow them carefully.

The results of a VI chemical peel are noticeable slowly at first but the full extent of the improvement becomes prominent after about six weeks.

How to Determine If You Have Vertigo

How to Determine If You Have Vertigo

How to Determine If You Have Vertigo
By Jennifer Marimon

My friend was driving her car off to fetch the kids in school. The world suddenly spin, she was kind of dizzy but she was there sitting still in the car while everything was moving too fast... she was out of the blue for a while, good grace she stepped on the brake. She shouted for help in the middle of the street. She was just having a vertigo attack.

Vertigo is a type of dizziness that most aging people experience. Some women in their menopausal stage suffer vertigo caused by hormonal imbalance. Here are the symptoms of vertigo, if you are experiencing some of these then it is not a usual dizziness but vertigo.

1. Difficulty in standing or walking properly due to dizziness. Weak limbs.
2. Nausea that last for 1 minute.
3. Visions that everything is spinning or moving.
4. Feeling of falling or dropping.
5. Visions seems blurry and appears double.
6. Could not focus and could not hear properly
7. Feeling of light-headedness
8. Discomfort in the ear.
9. Discomfort while swallowing.
10. Having facial paralysis.

The best way to prevent vertigo attack is to have enough sleep. An ideal 8 hour of sleep during the night and 1 to 2 hour nap during daytime can minimize the symptoms of vertigo. It is also advisable to avoid stress. Stress can cause hormonal imbalance causing vertigo to attack.

Nicotine and caffeine can also trigger the symptoms. It is better to quit smoking and avoid drinking coffee if you are diagnosed having vertigo. Coffee can cause serious sleep problems just like nicotine which inhibits sleep. Caffeine is consider a drug that can increase heart-rate making you alert and nervous.

My friend once told me that vertigo attacks is getting worse whenever she had sex with her husband. Of course, I am not saying that you should avoid having sex too. But I need to jot it down that attacks may vary according to activity of the person having vertigo. And sex may be one of the activities that triggers the attack.

From my friend's experience, the attack after she had sex brought her too much pain on her head giving her partial paralysis on her face. The numbness lasted around 10 minutes. She tried preventing random attacks by regular exercise and proper diet. She includes Buah Merah mix as part of her daily supplement. Now she can control the dizziness whenever vertigo tries to attack again,

Proper Care for Prosthetics

Proper Care for Prosthetics

Proper Care for Prosthetics
By Millie Roberts

Building the perfect prosthetic takes hard work. Proper limb care and skin care is essential to your health and mobility. To avoid swelling, discomfort, abrasions, trapped sweat, bacterial and fungal infections, here are some tips on how to take care of your extremity and skin. These tips are helpful in preventing or avoiding any further damage.

How to take care of your artificial limb:

• Your limb tends to swell in hot water as it dangles when you when you sit or stand in the shower. This will make it difficult to put on your prosthetic. That is why taking a shower at night will help to avoid swelling by raising the limb.

• If you have a prosthetic which is placed below the knee. It is vital never to sleep or sit with a pillow under the knee. This will lead to an inability to straighten the knee.

• For an artificial limb which is placed above the knee, it is important not to sleep with it on. When the limb is resting on a pillow, this promotes hip flexion or inability to straighten the hip. The best way is to place a pillow between your legs. This will help to lengthen the inner thigh muscle and shorten the outer thigh muscle so when you walk you can stand with your feet apart.

• Do not rest your limb over the handle piece of your crutches.

• It's important to stay active by doing stretching exercises. This can help to straighten your knee and hip. It'll make it easier for you to walk and lay in bed and will increase overall comfort.

Skin Care Tips for Prosthetics Patients:

• To avoid fungal growth, it is important to wash your prosthetic with soap and water.

• Only use softening creams if the skin is extremely dry and at risk for cracking.

• Do not use alcohol or unknown chemicals on the limb.

• Check your limb for red pressure patches that last more than a few minutes after you remove your extremity; these may be a sign that the socket needs checking. If left untended, these red patches may result in skin breakdown.

There are many people and resources readily available to help with your prosthetic limb and adjusting it for optimal comfort. Benefits of Drinking Enough Water

Benefits of Drinking Enough Water

Benefits of Drinking Enough Water
By Keegan Dix

Our bodies comprise of many different components, of all of the chemicals and elements that our body is comprised of though, one stands out above the rest H2O. We are of course talking about water, our bodies are approximately 60% water, this alone should stress the importance of staying hydrated, if we are 60% water it would stand to reason water is very important to the healthy function of our body.

Even though it is staring us in the face, many people around the world do not get enough water. Now we are not talking about the individuals that do not have access to clean water (they want to drink water it is just not available). We are talking about the people around the world for whom water is readily available, and yet they choose to drink unhealthy alternatives such as soft drinks.

Even drinks like Gatorade and PowerAde do not yield that many health benefits for the average person as water does. Sports drinks are packed full of electrolytes and performance enhancing nutrients that is true. They are also packed with preservatives and chemicals that our bodies don't need, so unless you are an athlete (or have an illness) there is absolutely no reason to drink them. Everything that they provide is readily available from more natural sources and in quantities that make more sense for the average person. Leaving out all of the negative aspects.

We have put together a list of the various benefits of drinking water. Hopefully some of these will strike home and help you to realize you need more H2O in your life.

Fluid Balance - As stated we as humans are 60% water and we need to consume between 9-16 glasses of water a day to maintain a healthy fluid balance. This helps our body transport nutrients better as well as keeping us feeling better.

Calorie Control - Forget the latest diet fad, drinking a glass of water before every meal will help you feel full. This means you will likely consume less calories.

Muscle Fuel - When we exert physical force using our muscles they use the water that they normally store. Drinking enough water will help prevent cramping during a workout, and it will also limit the amount of muscle fatigue you feel later on.

Kidney Function - Our kidneys process 200 quarts of blood every single day. They filter out all the toxins that we take in. However, in order to remove those toxins from out body the kidneys need to be able to make use of water to transport the toxins to the bladder where we expel them.

Fatigue Relief - Set the coffee down, our bodies don't "need" caffeine, it is a drug that tricks our body into feeling more awake and energetic. You don't need it though, drinking enough water every day will give you the same feeling of alertness and energy.

Boosting the Immune System - This ties back into the first point we made. Our bodies are mostly water, so it would stand to reason the white blood cells that make up our bodies defense against illness need water to function at their best. Drinking enough water can be crucial to maintaining your health.

These are but a few of the reasons we should all make sure that we drink enough water every single day. Don't wait go grab a glass!

Preventing Dehydration in Kids

Preventing Dehydration in Kids

Preventing Dehydration in Kids
By Juanita Swindell

All human bodies are made up of water, and this is why staying properly hydrated is so important. This is especially true for kids. With the heat of the summer upon us, hydration is essential for good health and well-being. This article will examine some of the causes of dehydration, why it is important to hydrate the body, and what you can do as a parent to avoid dehydration in your kids.

Causes of Dehydration

Quite simply, dehydration occurs when there isn't enough water in the body. Sweat is what our bodies use to cool us down, and sweat is made up not only of salt and microscopic toxins that our body is trying to release, but a majority of sweat comes out as water.

One of the main causes is because of viral infections, with symptoms that include a high fever and diarrhea. It is especially important to remember that infants and young children depend upon others to provide them with water and proper nutrition. Babies cannot tell an adult when they are uncomfortable or if they are thirsty, but they will fuss, cry, become listless and in severe cases may become very hot and not produce sweat.

Any time a child-whether an infant or an older child-does not produce sweat during intense heat or intense bouts of physical activity, this is a sign for concern. It is important to get water and electrolytes into the body before the child passes out or before other symptoms, such as listlessness, high fever, or a sense of being disoriented or dizzy occur.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Some of the symptoms include:

• Dry or sticky mouth-this is especially obvious in babies and very small children
• Irritability-this is also obvious in babies, and if this, along with a dry mouth, occur, give the baby water immediately
• Little to no urination-any urine that occurs in extremely dark in color
• Sunken eyes
• Restlessness at night or trouble sleeping
• Low blood pressure
• Rapid heartbeat
• Rapid breathing
• In extreme cases, unconsciousness may occur

Effective Prevention

Rather than rely on sugary drinks such as sodas and other cold drinks, it is better to give your child bottles of water, or if they are playing outdoors near home, have kids come inside to get some water. A drink that helps balance electrolytes within the body can be extremely beneficial.

Make sure kids drink plenty of water. It is equally important to make sure they come in from the extreme heat or after extreme physical activities and cool down periodically. Get them to take water breaks as often as possible. Water should be everywhere, make sure there's lots to drink!

Dehydration occurs when the body doesn't have enough water to function properly. Make sure your kids stay safe and hydrated with lots of water this summer!
